Evaluation of visual quality after unilateral multifocal IOL - implantation in young patients

H. J. M. W. Kölli, T. Schwarz

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results in a group of young patients undergoing unilateral cataract extraction with implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens (AMO Array ®, Pharm Allergan).

Patients / Methods: In this prospective study five patients (4males, 1 female) with a mean age of 39 years (range 19 - 54 yrs) underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of the AMO Array ® (Pharm Allergan) multifocal intraocular lens because of unilateral cataract (3 with traumatic cataract, 1 with cataract after uveitis and 1 patient with congenital cataract). Distance and near visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (VCTS 6500, Vistech Consultants), stereopsis and patients` satisfaction were evaluated.

Results: Average follow-up was 4,4 months (range 2 to 6 ms). BCVA of 20/40 or better was obtained in all patients, contrast sensitivity was moderately reduced, two patients showed good stereopsis (Lang positive) without correction and patients` satisfaction was very high (80%).

Conclusions: Our preliminary results show that multifocal IOL-implantation appears to be suitable restoring visual quality in young patients with unilateral cataract.
